NHS 111 offering local crisis mental health support
People in Cornwall who are in mental health crisis can benefit from support through the national NHS helpline, 111.
Those worried about their own or someone else's mental health can now use this number to access an experienced mental health team within the county.
"For several years we have had our own free, local helpline offering 24/7 signposting and support. But we encourage this change to a single point of access via 111. Now there is 1, easy to remember number to call for anyone feeling mentally or physically unwell.
"People calling 111 and selecting the mental health option will access the same 24/7 mental health signposting and support service that has been in place since 2020."
Lynsey Attwood, Operational Manager of Adult Mental Health Crisis Services
Callers should dial 111 and select the mental health option when prompted. They will then get through to the local, professional mental health team. The team will provide support and advice. They will also signpost to other services available in the county.
The NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Talking Therapies Service is also available for people aged 16 and over who need help with mental health conditions. These include anxiety or depression. The team also work with those experiencing negative symptoms of the menopause or sleep issues. Access this service via your GP or self-refer through the Talking Therapies Service.
"We know that more and more people are suffering with mental health issues and feeling more able to ask for help.
"We want to make sure that when they are in a crisis, they have an easy, memorable way to get support."
Lynsey
The NHS advice is still to call 999 if there is a serious risk to life.
